Emerging: Leilolai

We met the duo Leilolai (singer Christina and jack-of-whatever Lesley) at the Soulwax afterparty we were shooting and before a full-on introduction, they shoved their record in my hand.  Crazy, yes.  But totally to the point and we like that.  The group met, of all places, on Myspace and have been working together for about a year now, moving from their respective home bases to our fair Brooklyn, NY.  Over the course of the year, they completed a full length record, cheekily titling it The Best Of.  And of course, since we’re ego maniacs and love a good joke, we had to listen to it.  The record is all around grooved out to the nines, with bass and rampant found sounds banging here and there, with Christina’s honey-filled voice anchoring it all in.  Super smart, infectious and brave, we think that bands like Leilolai don’t get nearly enough hype to sustain them, but we want to change that.  We’ll start getting behind Leilolai now.
