Emerging: Lioness

In the wake of the adoration for old soul/rock and roll revivals (the leader of that pack of course being Ms. Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings as cohorts), a three-piece from Canada called Lioness may be the next in line to carry that seemingly eternal torch, albeit in somewhat of a new direction. The group, consisting of the rhythm section from defunct disco-thrash purveyors controller.controller and sultry soul-punk lead vocalist Vanessa Fischer, may only carry similarities to their throwback contemporaries in voice alone, but the evolution of sound that Lioness take hold of is nothing short of impressive. Jeff Scheven and Ronnie Morris create a guitar-less backbeat that is distinctly disco and house-y, while Fischer caws and moans relentlessly. It's perfect-pitched pop music that's as aware of its past as it is expecting of its own future. Which we feel certainly looks bright enough. The band's debut EP was just released last month. Fans who lament the loss of Death From Above 1979, take notice.
