That is A LOT of birds! A Florida airport is hiring a full-time avian expert at $76,000 a year to stop birds from fowl-ing up its flights.

We here around THE CULTURE OF ME were once obsessed with all things relating to Sassy and Dirt magazines. And while those titles are long gone, the sentiment of how they covered the culture industries has indeed left its mark on writers and culture vultures everywhere. It is because of that influence that we are proud to present our features post, “Getting Sassy with…”, wherein we bring you that much closer to your favorite bands by way of a simple Q&A session that’s both painless and informative. Ha! Beat that, FOX News!
This time: Curl Up.

Enigmatic D.J. and producer Daniel Salvaggio b/k/a Curl Up is New York through and through, from growing up in Brooklyn to moving into Manhattan and setting up shop and studio in his bedroom to signing with Brooklyn net label Subdrive. His music, however, is much harder to describe, but essentially it’s the combination of being enamored with glitchy and grinding hardcore and punk and the joining of that with the sort of low end-bumping, thrashing synth stabbing and computer magic-induced euphoric beats. Essentially, it’s pretty incredible stuff from a kid who’s young enough to be trying on new things all the time to see what fits and flirting with things that might not end up working at all. It’s trial and error defined. Here’s your peek inside the mind of Curl Up, all idiosyncrasies everything.
Name?
Daniel Salvaggio aka Curl Up.
Hometown?
New York City (Bensonhurst, Brooklyn).
I now live in:
New York City (Manhattan).
Number of States visited?
Most of ‘em, via touring back in the band days.
My favorite place in my hometown is:
My apartment/studio on the Upper West Side. I’ve got cheap rent, 3 cats and concrete walls, so sound is never an issue.
Most recent phone bill total?
Like $90 or so. I’ve got a cheap plan with very few minutes, as I’m immensely awkward on the phone.
Items found in my day-to-day bag (if applicable)?
Lighters, hair ties, headphone accessories, chargers, gum.. I’m a backpack kid.
First album bought on your own?
It was either White Zombie, Astrocreep 2000 or Primus, Tales From The Punchbowl (on cassette).
Favorite song memorized as a child?
Bulletboys, “For The Love Of Money” (for real).
When I sing in the shower, it’s usually:
99% of vocals make me cringe and I hardly know the lyrics to any songs. I mostly just hum out ideas for beats.
The one song that must be on every mixtape is:
Glover Junior, “Summertime”.
Last book read?
The Demon Haunted World: Science As A Candle In The Dark by Carl Sagan.
Favorite book ever?
Gonna go ahead and say Ender’s Game because I probably read it about 900 times as a kid.
Favorite thing you bought this year? My kitten, Cordelia. If all cats were like her, everyone would have cats.
Instruments played (chronologically)?
I’ve been playing guitar for a good 13 years now, but outside of that I just produce/D.J. and can play a couple Daft Punk songs on piano.
Least favorite day job before getting this gig?
Managing a certain clothing store that specializes in solid color clothing. Ahem.
Favorite record this year?
Probably the new Stray From The Path album that just came out.
Favorite record ever year?
Between The Buried And Me, Alaska.
The one record I’d save from a house fire is:
The only vinyl I own is Black Rob, Like Whoa, so I that one I suppose.
Guilty pleasure record you don’t want us to know about?
Mindless Self Indulgence, “Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Surprisingly Sexy”. Don’t judge me.
My favorite place to play on tour is:
Chain Reaction in LA. When I first got Internet, I’d come home from school and watch video of all my favorite hardcore bands playing there, so it was huge for me when we finally got to.
If I weren’t doing music I would be:
Completely empty and hating every day of my life. Outside of that, I’d probably be drawing or pursuing some sort of career related to animal care.
Last illegally downloaded song/album (be honest)?
Black Breath, Heavy Breathing. Awesome, dark, pissed off hardcore band I somehow just heard of. I’ll buy it when they play in NYC next.
Latest TV addictions?
“Breaking Bad”, “Jon Benjamin Has A Van”, anything relating to astronomy (“Wonders of the Universe with Brian Cox”, “Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman”, etc.). Also extremely excited for the return of “Fringe”.
Favorite music video this year?
Glover Junior , “Summertime” (just go watch it).
Who is in your dream band (must be living musicians)?
Guitars: Muhammed Scuimez (Necrophagist), Tosin Abasi (Reflux, Animals As Leaders); Bass: Dan Briggs (Between The Buried And Me); Drums: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah); Vocals: Vortex (Dimmu Borgir).
The best concert I went to this year was:
Movielife reunion at Bamboozle was awesome and like the only show I ever sang along to ever.
Recent song you can’t get out of your head?
The “Marvel vs. Capcom 3” character select screen music. “I wanna take ya for a riiide”.
Press play on your iPod/iPhone/media player and list the first three songs that come up.
It’s all mixtapes. Submerse, “Mix For You”; Trouble & Bass, “5 Year Anniversary Mix”; V!* episode #7: Hostage.
