Download: Parallels - “Moonlight Desires”
Icy synth pop kids Parallels are back in the game with their second album “XII” out June 26, 2012 via Marigold, and they’re leading off with a more optimistic P.O.V. with “Moonlight Desires” (at least it sounds more bright, really).
We can’t wait for more from the 80’s-gone-2012 group.

Photos: Scenes from last week’s Pop Montreal festival 2011
So, last week was the annual five-day Canadian international music, art and film festival known as Pop Montreal. We were approached by the gang at the festival and at the Montreal Tourism Board to partner up with noted Canadian photographer Richmond Lam to shoot some street style photos throughout the festival and we now have those results. And we couldn’t be happier with them, as Mr Lam has captured a ton of great shots in and around the downtown center and at venues and places like the Pop headquarters, Le Belmont, Notman House, Divan Orange and way, way more.

Download: Coeur de Pirate - “Wicked Games (The Weeknd cover)”
Abel Tesfaye’s amazingly tragic tale of drugs and sex and desire and lechery and risk gets tossed on its head with the sparse instrumentation of just a piano line and Béatrice Martin’s just-as-affected vocal delivery, transforming the House Of Balloons song “Wicked Games” into a broken, ragged and cracked (and cracked-out) sob story. Coeur de Pirate has been a perennial favorite of ours for some time now, and we’re still waiting for her supposed new record, which is still alleged to be releasing this year.

Web: Get “Thursday”, the new album from The Weeknd right now
Nine more songs of sexed up and drugged up love songs from Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd are now available for free download, much like the first mixtape/album that electrified the pop world just a few months ago, House of Balloons. Thursday is full of more of Tesfaye’s penchant for women in danger, women who cause danger and scenarios that both imply, and it features a few songs leaked before (“Rolling Stone”, “The Birds”) and all nine are worthy of many a repeat today and into the future.

Stream: The Weeknd - “The Party & The After Party (Kastle remix)”
On the whole, this just-posted remix from Kastle is one of the better remix from at least the last 90 days. Maybe even more than that. It grooves along the lines of The Weeknd’s original hazy nature and oversexed and underwhelmed pastiche and the beat employed is just a crusher. We’d have said this were a perfect song, but we’d be lying, if only due in large part to one major misstep: that of the inclusion of a mixtape-stylized drop of “Kastle” every so often throughout, which (for us at least) takes you out of the moment immediately, much like the gurus of this kind of technical employ (looking at you Clue, Flex, Green Lantern, Capri, Whoo Kid, et al.) would annoyingly incorporate at almost every instance possible. Otherwise, it’s pretty incredible. Nice work.
