“Within a year, GHE20GOTH1K was widely recognized as reanimating New York’s underground night life. It was one of the few parties where a wide cross section of the city — gay and straight, black and white, goths, punks, hip-hop heads, artists, music snobs, fashion designers like Mr. Ervell and even the occasional celebrity like Diplo — came to dance under one roof. Ms. Soto said she views D.J.-ing for such a diverse audience as a defiantly political act, and frequently peppers sound clips from the Al Jazeera news network, audio from the riots in Egypt and sound pings from submarines into her sets.”

For the second edition of the best disco and house party in New York City, Discovery, at the party’s new venue in Brooklyn, the biergarten Loreley on Frost Street, we asked funky tunes-loving Free Magic (above) and Faso to tell us five things the team loves about the new place, and what makes the party what it is: a true love affair with dance music, good times, all positivity, and nothing but smiles from start to sunrise.
Here’s what Free Magic (born Joel Fowler) and Faso (born Jason Fellows) came up with:
01 Playing where we live.
02 Being closer to the dance floor in the DJ booth.
03 Having a sweet outdoor area for the summer months.
04 Friendly security (who ask what song you’re playing as they dance).
05 $5 drafts of Scheider-Weisse Original, from a brewery that saved wheat beers from extinction in 1607. Best beer ever.
Discovery returns this Saturday night to Loreley with Voices Of Black and Beg To Differ.

In case you were living under a rock this past week, you’d know that Winter Music Conference/Miami Music Week/Ultra Music Festival just wrapped up, transforming Miami into the Mecca for EDM fans the world over. Mostly young raver kids though with no sense of real nostalgia, only false nostalgia. Silver lining, though, is that a ton of our favorite people in the whole world were there DJing, playing, and partying it up the whole week, so we asked some of them to come up with their Top 5 Highlights.
Up next, Eric Sharp, San Francisco-based DJ, producer, and label owner (Rock It Science Laboratories), as well as a member of the few who’ve released tracks on the venerable Tommie Sunshine’s label Brooklyn Fire, who talks up Teki Latex, Madonna, Dirtybird’s barbecue, and DJ’ing for friends who just so happen to also be DJs.

(Teki Latex and Sharp)
1. The Beach - The water in Miami (unlike San Francisco) is actually warm enough that you can saunter in without a wetsuit. We went to the northern part of the beach to stay clear of fist-pumpers and the like. Turns out Miami’s beach is actually pretty boss.
2. “Flightplan” - This Jodie Foster movie is so bad that it’s good. Thursday night we were just feeling kind of over everything so rather than running around like chickens with our heads cut off we found an awful movie to make fun of while chilling in a hotel room. Definitely found ourselves wondering why we’d never been on an airplane that has multiple floors, a bar, and an enormous compartment for bomb-planting.
3. The Dirtybird BBQ - Instead of throwing a pool party like everyone else, Dirtybird set it off this year with a BBQ. We got there at 8pm and everyone was already shattered from day-drinking. It’s inspiring to see the birds of a different feather doing their own thing (musically and otherwise) while still drawing a who’s who of dance music to their parties. Diplo, Laidback Luke, Teki Latex, and Louisahhh!!! were among the folks I spotted here while the throb of 808s shook the crowd.
4. Madonna - I randomly found myself at Madonna’s release party for her new single or album or whatever on Friday night. Shrugging off my puzzlement regarding what I was doing there, I actually met some interesting people. I heard rumors that she was there somewhere but I figured they were just that - rumors. Much to my surprise I woke up this morning to the Internet slagging her to pieces for her bizarro-world Avicii introduction at Ultra. “MDNA”, um what?
5. Renting a car - I’ve never attempted this before, but since I was staying at 60th and Collins in an Airbnb condo this year I decided to brave what I thought would be certain parking and traffic madness so that I would have freedom of mobility. In fact, Miami is not a very difficult place to park, and having a vehicle gives you a ton of freedom while opening up a huge range of housing options that don’t involve South Beach. I think moving forward this is definitely the way to go.
6. Honorable Mention: DJing to a practically empty room but everyone there is an artist whom you have great respect for.
